Defined in National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) Pub 180-1: "Secure Hash Standard. 17 April 1995", superseded by NIST FIPS Pub 180-2 (see also IETF RFC 3174, "US Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA1)").

The OID was assigned in IEEE P1363 according to Y. C. Yeung.
